This year's winning projects, selected by judges Tracy Meller (Richard Rogers Partnership), Eleanor Young (RIBA Journal) and Phil Williams (BCSA) were announced at the awards ceremony in London on the 8th June, and included:
|
WINNER
THE BRIT OVAL, REDEVELOPMENT OF THE VAUXHALL END BY THE MILLER PARTNERSHIP - The
galvanized elements of this project are fully integrated into a facade
which uses timber, steel and fabric. The result is an elegant and
dramatic structure in which the galvanized elements appear to be loved
and celebrated as much as the glulam. The form of the screen responds to the cascading geometry of the stand and configuration of the site. |

|
| | | | | HIGHLY COMMENDED UNDERGROUND GALLERY, YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK BY FEILDEN CLEGG BRADLEY - The
gallery forms a continuation of the linear concourse of the new Visitor
Centre. The full height glazed external wall is supported by a bespoke
structure of galvanized elliptical steel columns. The project
demonstrates a real celebration of galvanizing as it has clearly been
chosen for its aesthetic qualities rather than its weathering ability. |
|
| | | | HIGHLY COMMENDED BELLMOUTH PASSAGE FOOTBRIDGE BY TECHNIKER LTD - The
new galvanized Bellmouth Passage Footbridge, Canary Wharf, London was
designed by Techniker Ltd. The substantial base structure for the
bridge is complemented by lightweight enclosures of folded steel plate
and glass.
The judges commented on the elegant and refined solution in which the painted galvanized steel sits beautifully with the glass.

| | HIGHLY COMMENDED FAWOOD CHILDREN'S CENTRE BY SMC ALSOP
SMC
Alsop were commended for the clever design of this Children's Centre in
London. Fawood Children's Centre is the antithesis of the traditional
approach to nursery design.
The design team sought to provide
a total integration of the external and internal learning environments
within a simple galvanized steel portal frame enclosure. The primary
structure for the centre reflects the thoughtful and exuberant design
while using galvanized steel expertly and for its inherent strengths. |
